Teachable transaction fees, by plan, in dollars not percents
Starter’s headline is $39/mo. The product is 7.5% of every sale. Here is that cut in dollars at $97, $497, and $2,000 — plus the card fee that sits on every plan.
Who this page is for
Experts who already have an offer, who are staring at Teachable’s public pricing page, and who need the 7.5% vs 0% split in money rather than another percent table. It is not a review of Teachable as a school. It is the fee line, expanded.
Arithmetic uses the official rates. The dollar columns assume the listed price is the transaction value with no tax added. Teachable Pay’s own words: the platform cut is “7.5% of total transaction value (product price including taxes).” If your checkout includes tax, the base — and the dollars — go up. We do not invent a tax rate.
Two different fees
Platform transaction fee
Teachable’s cut. Public pricing FAQ: 7.5% on Starter. 0% on Builder, Growth, and Custom if you use teachable:pay or Monthly Payment Gateway. Standard processing fees may still apply.
On Starter
7.5% of the transaction. Teachable Pay (updated June 22, 2026): 7.5% of total transaction value (product price including taxes).
On Builder+
0% on teachable:pay or Monthly Payment Gateway. That 0% is conditional. Leave those gateways and the public FAQ no longer covers you — Custom Payment Gateway surcharge was not loadable this fetch (401), so it is omitted.
Processing fee
The card / PayPal / BNPL cut. Teachable Pay: same across all plan levels; varies by method and student location.
US card (cited)
2.9% + $0.30. This is on Starter and on Builder. Dropping the 7.5% does not drop this.
Not optional
US PayPal 3.49%+$0.49. International card 3.9%+$0.30. International PayPal 4.99%+$0.49. Buy Now Pay Later 6.99%+$0.30. Cited below in dollars.
Plan subscription
What you pay Teachable to keep the school open. Not a per-sale cut. USD. 22% off annual vs month-to-month.
Public cards
Starter $39/mo or $29/mo annual. Builder $89 / $69. Growth $189 / $139. Custom: contact sales.
The trap
Starter is $50/mo cheaper than Builder on monthly billing ($40/mo cheaper on annual: $69 vs $29). That gap is what the 7.5% has to beat.
The 7.5% in dollars
Platform cut only. No card fee yet. Base = listed price, no tax.
| Sale | Starter 7.5% | Builder / Growth / Custom 0%* |
|---|---|---|
| $97 | $7.28 | $0 |
| $497 | $37.28 | $0 |
| $2,000 | $150.00 | $0 |
7.5% of $97 = $7.275, rounded to $7.28. 7.5% of $497 = $37.275, rounded to $37.28. 7.5% of $2,000 = $150.00. *0% if you use teachable:pay or Monthly Payment Gateway, per the public pricing FAQ. Teachable Pay names Builder, Growth, Advanced, and Business at 0% on Teachable Payments — live public cards are Starter / Builder / Growth / Custom.
US card processing, same three sales
Teachable Pay: US card 2.9% + $0.30, all plan levels. This is not Teachable’s 7.5%. It does not go away on Builder.
| Sale | US card 2.9%+$0.30 | Starter total (7.5% + US card) | Builder total (0% + US card) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $97 | $3.11 | $10.39 | $3.11 |
| $497 | $14.71 | $51.99 | $14.71 |
| $2,000 | $58.30 | $208.30 | $58.30 |
US card: $97 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $3.113 → $3.11. $497 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $14.713 → $14.71. $2,000 × 0.029 + $0.30 = $58.30. Starter totals add the 7.5% before rounding the combined figure ($7.275+$3.113 = $10.388 → $10.39; $37.275+$14.713 = $51.988 → $51.99; $150+$58.30 = $208.30).
Other processing methods, in dollars
Still Teachable Pay, still the same across plans. These replace the US-card column when that method is the one used. They do not replace the 7.5% on Starter.
| Method (official rate) | On $97 | On $497 | On $2,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| US PayPal 3.49%+$0.49 | $3.88 | $17.84 | $70.29 |
| International card 3.9%+$0.30 | $4.08 | $19.68 | $78.30 |
| International PayPal 4.99%+$0.49 | $5.33 | $25.29 | $100.29 |
| Buy Now Pay Later 6.99%+$0.30 | $7.08 | $35.04 | $140.10 |
| Currency conversion 0.95% (when charged) | $0.92 | $4.72 | $19.00 |
| BackOffice 2.8% standard (rate “may vary”) | $2.72 | $13.92 | $56.00 |
Teachable Pay: some non-USD transactions incur 0.95% currency conversion, “varies based on currency and student location.” BackOffice, if enabled, is “an additional fee… calculated on total transaction value (price including taxes) before processing fees. The rate may vary, but the standard BackOffice fee is 2.8%.” BackOffice is not in the Starter totals above. International PayPal: $97 × 0.0499 + $0.49 = $5.3303 → $5.33; $497 × 0.0499 + $0.49 = $25.2903 → $25.29.
Starter vs Builder, still in dollars
Public prices: Starter $39/mo monthly, $29/mo annual (save $120). Builder $89/mo monthly, $69/mo annual (save $240). Gap: $50/mo month-to-month, $40/mo on the advertised annual rates. Annual billing is 22% off.
The 7.5% has to recoup that gap before Starter is “cheaper.” Arithmetic on the no-tax bases above, platform cut only (card processing is on both plans):
- $97 sales. Each costs $7.28 in platform fee on Starter. Seven sales = $50.93, which already exceeds the $50 monthly gap. Six sales = $43.65, which exceeds the $40 annual gap. Builder’s extra subscription is paid for by a slow week of a $97 offer.
- $497 sales. One sale is $37.28 — under both gaps. Two sales are $74.55 — over both. A consultant who sells two $497 seats in a month does not have a cheap Starter plan.
- $2,000 sales. One sale is $150.00. That is three months of the monthly gap, and more than three months of the annual gap, before the card network is paid.
That is not a break-even forecast. Refunds, tax-inclusive bases, reserves, and coupons change the dollar. It is the 7.5% applied to three prices a real offer actually uses. If you sit on Starter “until it sells,” the first $2,000 invoice has already paid for more than three months of Builder.

Cash you do not see on the pricing cards
- Reserves. Teachable Pay: standard reserve 10%, unlocked 45 days after purchase. New schools may face a 100% reserve with a 14-day unlock, covering Teachable’s 14-day refund window. Some transactions 0% reserve. This is withheld cash, not a listed percent on the pricing page.
- BackOffice 2.8% standard if you enable it, on total transaction value before processing fees, rate may vary. Author and affiliate payouts then run monthly via Monthly Payment Gateway.
- Refunds. Teachable Pay does not list a refund processing refund. Kajabi’s US article (different vendor) says original fees are not returned; Teachable Pay’s refund language on this fetch is about reserves and payout breakdowns, not a published “fees returned” line — so a Teachable refund-fee dollar is omitted.
Who should not sit on Starter
Anyone whose next twelve months include a real paid offer. A $97 product that sells seven times in a month has already spent the Builder gap in platform fees. A $2,000 consulting invoice spends it three times over on the first sale. Builder is the honest Teachable starting point if the offer is real. Growth is a catalog and branding conversation (50 products, remove Teachable branding), not a fee conversation — the 0% is already on Builder.
If you needed Kajabi or Thinkific instead, the 7.5% is not their product. Kajabi Payments: no extra platform percentage; US card on Basic 2.9%+$0.30. Thinkific Payments: no third-party gateway fee; public native headline 2.9%. Those hosts are compared on Kajabi vs Teachable vs Thinkific.

Teachable affiliate slot — not live
Teachable buttons are official product URLs only. Kajabi’s trial box and visit button use the 30-day trial affiliate, justinwise.net/kajabi, for readers who leave Teachable over the 7.5% — official Kajabi pricing remains the source for Kajabi numbers.
Omitted on purpose
- Teachable Custom Payment Gateway extra percentage. Official help URLs for custom gateways and the Teachable Fees article returned 401 / “sign in” this fetch. Not on teachable.com/pricing. Third-party recaps quote 2% for US schools. Not in the tables.
- Teachable Advanced as a current public card. June 2025 help lists Advanced. The live pricing page shows Starter / Builder / Growth / Custom. Teachable Pay still names Advanced and Business at 0% on Teachable Payments.
- A tax-inclusive dollar table. 7.5% is of price including taxes. We did not invent a sales-tax rate to inflate $97 / $497 / $2,000.
- A break-even month presented as advice. The seven-$97 / two-$497 / one-$2,000 arithmetic is the 7.5% applied to those prices. Refunds, reserves, and tax change it.
- Chargeback / dispute dollars. Not extracted as a published fee on the Teachable Pay article this fetch.
- Keyword volumes, “Teachable is expensive” listicles as pricing sources, and anything that documents your method for you.
